Acura’s Time Machine: Stepping Back into a 1986 JDM Showroom
Back to 1986: Acura’s Retro Revival
If you have ever wished you could hop in a DeLorean and head back to the golden era of the 80s, Acura just gave us the next best thing. To celebrate 40 years of performance, the brand completely recreated a period-correct 1986 dealership at the Grand Prix of Long Beach.
This was not just a couple of old cars parked on a rug. We are talking full immersion, from the neon signs down to the chunky beige computers and period-correct office chairs.
The Icons That Started It All
When Acura launched in 1986, it was a massive gamble for Honda. They were the first Japanese luxury brand to take on the European heavyweights, and they did it with two legendary machines.
The display featured a pristine first-gen Legend and a mint Integra, reminding everyone why these cars became instant classics. These were engineered masterpieces that redefined what a reliable performance car could be in the mid-80s.
| Feature | 1986 Integra | 1986 Legend |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 1.6L DOHC 16-Valve | 2.5L SOHC V6 |
| Horsepower | 113 hp | 151 hp |

A Vibe Like No Other
Walking into the exhibit felt exactly like stepping onto a vintage movie set. The walls were adorned with original marketing posters and the desks were cluttered with brochures that looked like they had just come off the press.
It is a powerful reminder of Acura’s roots and how they paved the way for the JDM performance culture we love today. Seeing these cars in their original habitat makes you appreciate the DNA that still exists in their modern Type S models.
