Subaru’s New Rally Weapon: The BRZ Is Swapping Asphalt for Dirt

A Bold Departure from Tradition

Subaru and rallying go together like turbos and blow-off valves, but usually, we expect a WRX to lead the charge. Subaru Motorsports USA is shaking things up by officially entering the second-generation BRZ into the world of stage rally. This RWD enthusiast favourite is stepping out of its comfort zone and onto the gravel.

The Build: Prepared by Vermont SportsCar

Turning a low-slung sports car into a rally-ready beast requires more than just a set of mud flaps. The legends at Vermont SportsCar have stripped this BRZ down to its core to prepare it for the American Rally Association (ARA) circuit. It features a custom-fabricated roll cage, heavy-duty underbody protection, and a suspension setup designed for massive air.

Engine and Drivetrain Specs

Unlike the AWD monsters we usually see, this BRZ remains rear-wheel drive to compete in the Open 2WD class. It retains the 2.4-litre naturally aspirated Boxer engine, providing that low centre of gravity Subaru is famous for. Seeing this platform slide through forest stages is going to be a masterclass in car control.

Why RWD Rallying Matters

Rear-wheel-drive rallying is a throwback to the golden era of the sport where throttle steering is everything. By campaigning the BRZ, Subaru is highlighting the agility and balance of the chassis on the most demanding surfaces. For JDM fans, it is a refreshing change to see a modern sports car being used for something other than track days or drifting. Keep an eye out for this BRZ as it tackles some of the toughest stages in North America. It is proof that you don't need four driven wheels to put on a spectacular show in the dirt.
